A New Friend of the Vermilon River. A Post to World Bird Wednesday.

I have mentioned frequently that I see very few local people on my hikes as the forest and wildlife does not appeal to them. But I now know we're spending too much time alone in the bush when this is one of our new friends. I guess he thinks of himself as our East Forest Guardian, after all we have Hugin our Raven in the west, and now we're covered in the east. After he has taken the peanut you can still see it in his mouth in the last 3 photos. I might add that he took 3 peanuts at once so you can imagine how big he is.

    it must have been hungry if it stayed that close. It is really black. And they are large over here too. Beautiful shots, the plumage looks like satin. :)

    I'm so glad to see good feather detail on a raven. Black birds are so tough to get right. You sure make it look easy Gary. For me there is something cool about the "grin" on number six and that sir is my pick!

    Hi - I like crows in all their forms - we get Ravens in Souht Australia - but many people just call them crows.

    I think they are really smart birds!

    Great shots, Gary, of an intelligent looking bird. As Springman said, black on black is to hard to photograph, but you did an excellent job. I love the deep croaking calls that raven make when flying. They look like crows on steroids.

    Superb shots of what we down here call the Common Raven, although, personally, I find nothing common about ravens. I agree with Dave that they are difficult to get good detail due to their overall blackness, and these images are awesome. The straight on capture is my favorite also.

    Such intelligent birds!
