Pine Squirrels of the Vermilon River. A Post to Macro Monday.
The Vermilon River is home to Red Squirrels not black or even gray. The forest here is mixed, but primarily coniferous. Red squirrels main source of food are spruce seeds and the piles of empty cones are known as middens. They also feed on mushrooms and other fallen seeds. The seeds are stored in a cache to sustain them over the year.
Females will breed indiscrimately with available and multiple males. So the squirrel family is a somewhat lose concept.

Hiya Gary,
ReplyDeleteA double helping from you today :-)
Nice to see red squirrels for a change.
Quite a feat to get an unblurred shot of these lively creatures.
Oh what a cuty :)
ReplyDeleteI just love Squirrels !
Hi Gary, nice shots of the red squirrels! We have them here too, not our favorite animals since they get up into our attic, squeezing through even the tiniest crack... gorge themselves on our bird feeder and are generally into mischief. Yet they are cute creatures.
ReplyDeleteAwwwwwwwwwwwwww, so sweet!!! What a special treat for us to view your blog today.
ReplyDeleteMy Monday feature is: COLORFUL fungus
The squirrel is so cute!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shots!
So cute! He looks a lot like our fox squirrels.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I did not know their family concept! They are so cute:) That's the bottom line.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Gary.
Yoshi
We have them here - they are cute:)
ReplyDeleteI get a big kick out of the red squirrels. They're so little and feisty. Unfortunately, around here, they are losing the battle against the gray squirrels. I haven't seen a red in a couple of years, so it was a real treat to see your pictures.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute little fellow. I've never seen one here, we have mostly greys.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots, Gary. Love those ears. No red squirrels down this direction.
ReplyDeleteGreat photo series! Like that red coloring..it shines in the sunlight.
ReplyDeleteHi MM; they are hard to shoot if they're not co-operating.
ReplyDeleteHi Lillagul. They're grand at a distance.
ReplyDeleteI think all squirrels are cute at a distance, Hilke. Here they're in the forest where they belong.
ReplyDeleteHi Anni. They're sweet in the forest!!
ReplyDeleteGreat images of your reds Gary. I am fortunate enough to live not too far from a few protected sites which still have our native Red Squirrels which have been devastated by the introduction from America of the dominant Grey.
ReplyDeleteThanks CA for the visit and words.
ReplyDeleteHi RR, I don't think we've seen a fox squirrel.
ReplyDeleteHi Yoshi. Not much of a family concept is it?
ReplyDeleteAt a distance Joo.
ReplyDeleteHi Louise. The grays will chase them right out.
ReplyDeleteHi Karen. We don't have grays or blacks at all.
ReplyDeleteThanks Marvin for the kind words.
ReplyDeleteHi Dawn and they are a vivid red.
ReplyDeleteI read that on the web yesterday, Andrew, and it's too bad. Your reds have more furry ears
ReplyDeleteGreat capture, love his/her fuzzy tail..lol Thanks for stopping by today it's wonderful to meet you :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit MO2G, and the kind words.
ReplyDeleteI am a squirrel lover and I think these photos are just great!
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful animal, well done Gary.
ReplyDeleteHi amohysi.com. Thanks for the favourable review!!
ReplyDeleteI knew that you'd like them Bob.
ReplyDeleteLOVE them!
ReplyDeleteI think I mentioned on the post about your walk and seeing a squirrel how they are one of my favorite critters. For a couple of years there have been two gray and one red that share my backyard. I've seen the grays off and on during winter. The red one came by this week.
The first photo here is my favorite.
Thanks Carletta. I think their activity indicates in their mind that winter is over.
ReplyDeleteThese are so CUTE! And your chickadee photos are wonderful as well! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks texisgirl and welcome to the blog.
