A Bit of Whimsy At The Vermilon River.

If nothing else the weather has been consistent. Cool, and cloudy in the mornings, with intermittent sun, and fog. Then, rain in the afternoon and night. The lighting changes with every bend in the trail, giving an amateur such as myself, an opportunity to play with some artsy shots. Hence the title of the post. The initial scenes are all of the River shrouded in mist.

The post is full of photos, so again: CLICK ON ANY PHOTO TO ENLARGE AND VIEW THE SLIDESHOW, ALTHOUGH I SUGGEST YOU READ THE COPY FIRST.

A post to Our World TuesdayI'd-Rather-B-Birdin', and Wild Bird Wednesday.

Female Mallard and young duckling

Previously, I had not seen many woodpeckers. This Hairy is making up for that, seeing me off on my hike. The female Hairy below was shot on my feeder and not included in the last post. I need to remind her that the seed she is flinging around costs money.

Now the warbler photos begin with this male Redstart.

Chestnut-sided Warbler.

Yellow-rumped Warbler(still fuzzy)

Oven Bird.(a Warbler).

Now this fellow is clearly an immature, but which one? At first I thought it was a Nashville Warbler, But there are no eye rings. On another web site in an almost identical photo, it was identified as an immature Common Yellow-Throat (Warbler).
Here we go again, and this one was on the west side of the River with all the other warblers. Notice the brown and white markings, but I think the key is the beak which is a Grosbeak shape.
So I enlarged her/him to 100% to see if there were any head markings. I don't think so.
Fanned Tail

Again Looking for head markings.

This is a male Purple Finch. Look at the beak and chest markings. He's an immature just coming into his colours. So I think it's an immature male Purple Finch in the preceding photos, not yet in his colours.
Same.

Cabbage White.

Common Yarrow.

Goldenrod.

With the arrival of the rain, the forest has rejuvenated itself. Look at the purple and pink together.

  1. You have a wonderful landscape! I love the pictures of the waters. Good that it has rained at last. Lovely birds, especially like the red-winged blackbird. And of course the spider net. I wish you a great sunday!

  2. Gary, great post as usual. I love all the pretty birds. And the flowers are gorgeous. Wonderful photos.

  3. Very lovely and whimsical shots! Love the spider webs and you always have such a great variety of birds in each post! I think your unknown pink flower in both this and the last post might be Swamp Milkweed. Monarchs love it and you might find their caterpillars eating it.

  4. The leaves on the pink flower look more like a sedum now that I look again. Wild sedum?

  9. Beautiful photo series showing.
Many of the bird species you show we do not have here.
We have a "heat wave" right moment, sun + almost 30 degrees, so we do not see as many birds, but we have many insects (butterflies / dragonflies mm)
Wish you a good Sunday evening :)

  11. Lovely slide show. The first two photos are gorgeous scenic shots and I love the clouds reflected in the water.

  12. I think your mystery flower is sedum also. It is a succulent with a thick leaf, and if I remember correctly the leaf is scalloped. If you blow up the flowers they look like several tiny tulips.

  13. Lovely bird photos, but my favourite is the spider web. I agree with sedum for the mystery plant.

  14. Where do I begin? First of all, I have never seen [that I know of] a juvenile Red Winged Blackbird....I appreciate those photo shares!!! And the warbler with the fanned tail.........super incredible. Around here in Southern Coastal Texas, I've only seen one woodpecker species, so your woodpecker photos; an extra special treat.

Gary, I always enjoy your nature posts. They're fabulous.

Thanks for linking up this week at the Bird D'Pot.

  18. I like the light play. Always nice to see a forest rejuvenate from rain. It's interesting to see the birds that we have in common in our respective parts of the world and also the ones you see that I don't.
