2012 In Photographic Retrospect ( Part 2 ) At The Vermilon River.

I think 2012 was a bumper year in terms of what we saw of the four legged critters, and the flying wildlife, including insects and butterflies. Or perhaps Boom & I were just more aware of forest bounty. I started the series off with mommy fox because it was such a serendipitous sequence. She is on the other side of the River protected by the rapids. I just caught sight of her as I was seated, and rose, catching the sequence. If she looks a little gaunt, it's because the kits come first. She would normally bring the prey back alive and the kits would kill it as part of their training. They would of course feed first. Also notice the way she has them hidden away for protection.

Click the photos to enlarge and watch the slide show. A post to Id Rather Be BirdinOur World Tuesday, and WBW.
Now she's sidled off to the side.

Hurry up It's time to go

This is a night shot taken in the middle of the night. The fox is eating birdseed on the ground. They'll eat berries and seed in the winter. Just a quick response to Roy who though that I must look forward to the warmer months. Actually, I like all four seasons as each one of them has their own critters, and equally some disadvantages. If I had any wish, I would make Boomer two years younger and get rid of my bad leg. That way Boom could snowshoe ( maybe sled) with me again in the winter, and I could explore the River by kayak in the summer which would be superior to hiking the trails.

  6. my, a smorgasbord of photographs; the foxes are great, how you managed to get those photos is amazing. One'd expect Mum would quickly disappear with a human nearby. You hid well? Then the yellow-throat has to be my favourite; a beautiful bird to see

  7. I read this earlier this morning, but saved my comments for now. Stunning photos, I guess at times we all wish for a better body, less years, but maturity has its blessings, with my white hair, I am no longer amazed or insulted when anyone of any age, asks if I would like some help? parcels, groceries? heavy bags?? and this can come from people of all ages. Chivalry is still alive. Enjoy your days, Boomer is one beautiful, loving companion, Greetings from Jean

  11. So busy smiling I can hardly write! I've learned so much (so beautifully) from your blog. Today I played a little game and watched the slide show first...to see if I recognized and remembered some of the ones that were new to me before (I did, you're a good teacher.). I am so in awe of your talent and as well of your beautiful home territory. There's just not enough words in my vocabulary to tell you.

  36. I agree with Pam....that BTBW is one cool looking warbler!! But the fox is outstanding. They can be quite elusive. All of your nature shots are wonderful. I agree with you...2012 was a good year for me as well. The butterflies were outstanding!!! But the birds and critters were just as incredible. Your pics are wonderful. I want to take pics of bears but I am afraid. I know where they are but I leave them alone because many times I'm alone and don't want to have a quick run:) All my best. Chris

  52. Nice pics.
We have Fox on both sides of our very urban Arkansas River. In running along the paths in the last 20 years I've encountered Fox three times and haven't had a camera all three times. They are very bold and unconcerned about my presence.

  59. An amazing set of images Gary. Your 2012 appears to have been much better than ours as we had rain, rain and more rain. This did not help such things as butterflies and flying insects and it was a wash out for young birds as well.
