A Change of Pace: A Trip to Mantoulin Island

This is certainly a change of pace; in fact no nature at all. This post details a trip to Manitoulin Island, concentrating on Little Current, and Kagawong. The Island, Manitoulin means"spirit world"in Ojibwa, is the 172 largest island in the world, which I find astounding since it is located in the Great Lakes.Or the largest fresh wate island in the world. You can reach it by ferry from Tobermory, by swing bridge, or by sail which,as an old freshwater sailor, I think is the best way. Opposite:The Swing Bridge.
While there I heard that European cruise ships are now making it a stop over. No wonder since the Island has over 100 freshwater lakes of its own, augmented with numerous hiking trails, some along the ridge in the back of the opposite picture. That's the North Channel favourite trail of the fur traders of the 18th century. The population is about 12000, but grows in the summer, because it is so accessible from the south. The deer population is larger that the human one. In fact in Little Current the Stars, and Stripes is just as numerous as the Canadian flag.

Another view of the North Channel.  We'll visit Little Current, a sailing mecca and Kagawong on the Georgian Bay side of the Island. I'm encouraging you to view the video because it so much more complete. Just click the Vimeo link below, which will take you to the Video directly. You can leave comments there, or here.

  41. It was so much fun to watch that video...you're really getting professional (and fun to hear your voice!)...the Island is wonderful. I'm really glad you got to go there and thank you for sharing it. It just seems like a charming place and I know we'd love it.

Also please send me some of that no-calorie chocolate ))))

  42. Forgot ... I was going to say that the church reminded me of the one we visited in Massachusetts where Herman Melville went and where he got the inspiration for Moby Dick. And it has the boat part as an altar too.

  43. Enjoyed this post. We had a cottage further west on Manitoulin for 10 years in the 80's, and drove from the ferry dock many times along the south shore roads. The chocolate shop must be new; I'm sure we would have found it quickly if it was there when we were!
