Scenes, Butterflies, Birds and Squirrels of the Vermilon River. A Post to SWF.

River before Rapids.
The skies as you can see are not especially vivid. They range from overcast to a bit of sun, although we have had rain, which we needed. So for the post today I included some shots that I like from my hikes, and not much copy.

Scenes, Birds , Flowers, Turtles and Creatures of the Vermilon River. A Post to MWT.

Island In Vermilon.
This post is a collection of images. With the heat and some personal things to do, I haven't been getting as far, but I have been out. The first shots are of the river islands, and its rock outcroppings. You can see from photo 2 that everything is not perfect in our paradise either. See the name on the rock in the forefront. I normally remove any graffiti which mar the rocks, but left them this time for you to see.
Rock Face.

Turtle.
The turtle is from another wetland, actually north of Mystic Lake as are the water lilies and the water weed.

White-throated Sparrow.
I am always intrigued  by White-throated Sparrows as they make me work to get the shot, and when I do it always look like I paid them to pose. These shots are from the woods directly behind me, about a 3 minute walk.

Male Hairy Woodpecker.

Huegy?

The Male Hairy Woodpecker is visiting my feeders again. I'm pretty certain this is Huegy the crow as the shot is from the back woods also and he has just finished calling. The song Sparrow is from the same woods.

Red Day Lilly.

Yellow Day Lilly.
The day lilies are from my garden and seem early this year. I'm pretty certain that Louise can identify them all.

Of course, I ended with a photo of this guy.

Views of The Vermilon River. A Post to SWF

Morning Dark Sky

What the heck does a sky like this mean- disaster maybe? Then it lightened so I went over to the river trail on a hot, sultry, soggy hike. But I made it home before the big rain.

Island In the River.

The day was gray, but the forest is still pretty lush. And before you ask; you can canoe or kayak safely to the north for a couple of hundred miles, and further if you want. The river has receded with the lack of rain, and looks benign, but it's still pretty cold.

Tiger lilies grow wild along the river bank in the oddest places.

Common Yarrow

This turtle was sunbathing in a wetland on another day,but I thought you might enjoy seeing him. I never tire of Song Sparrows who are around despite the heat. And of course, a four legged creature, the Red Squirrel.

I'm posting this in rather a rush as blogger/google is messing up again.

Scenes of The Vermilon River. A Post to Watery Wednesday.

A Further View of the River.

Snow Covered River
Still fascinated by the gray light. Effectively, the snow is the brightest feature thus lighting the scene. And again I don't find the gray depressing at all. The Vermilon River begins its life in Shining tree about 2-300 miles north of here and meanders its way through my area later turning into several rivers with different names, a lake named Vermilon lake, and becomes part of the Spanish river eventually draining into Lake Huron.

Several people have written that they wouldn't mind rambling through this area.My limit is about a 10 mile radius, about 3 miles out and 3 miles back mostly because I'm lame, and any more and I'm pushing it. Most of the land is crown land (government land), RR right of way, with some mining areas, not many. The point I'm making is that with no physical limitations you could hike for miles using trails and old forest roads, or the river and its many wetlands using a canoe. Yup, you could pan for gold and find some colour but don't give up your day job. There are a multitude of lakes, most uninhabited, some of which I'll explore with you as I did my immediate wetlands( see earlier posts). The bulk of the locals are both uncomfortable, and find no beauty in this extraordinary forest. You won't see anybody except on the weekends when they ride their ATV's. Your company will be the wildlife-animals, and birds which are wild, some of which are quite large. It's not a park or game preserve, it's the real forest. Sound appealing; so how far can you hike, and how much time do you have?
