Northern Flickers are ground based woodpeckers feeding on ants. They also crush the ants and use the formic acid to clean their feathers. The male and female have identical plumage, except the male has a black moustache running off his beak. They're quick but erratic fliers, and many times have startled me. The white patch on the male likely indicates some feathers lost in a tangle with a predator.
