The weather has again been all over the place from some sun to a spring type storm with high winds and wet snow. The scenic photos are still from our frosty hike to the west side of the River. The point in the title is two fold.
As I told you I have been on the outlook for Hoary Redpolls as opposed to the Common Redpoll. I finally found a lone female. Now I just have to spot the Greenlander variety, which has been seen in the Thunderbay area. The other point is the variation in the female Pine Grosbeaks colour and coverage.
I'll point out the Hoary, and the female Pine Grosbeak colour variation by way of captions as it`s a long post.
This is a female Hoary Redpoll recognizable by her buff coloured chest and the less definite stripes on her side. The real key is the white/buff patch between her wings on her back.

ReplyDeleteFabulous photos! I think the Evening Grosbeak is my favorite.

Great series of wonderful photos again on your site!
ReplyDeleteGreetings from cold Finland! We had this morning -30 Celsius. I am a little worried because of small birds here, bird feeders have been so empty yesterday and today, only few Great tits and Greenfinches have visited there.
I hope they will survive, this week will be really that cold still.
Wow...such a beautiful landscape! I hope i will have the chance to visit Canada some day!
ReplyDeleteAnd the bird photos...so nice!
super photos again and a wide variety of birds.

Fab, Gary you are so lucky to be able to photography these birds and have the scenery as an added extra. Real nice
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos, Gary, my fave is the Blue Jay!
ReplyDeleteGary, your bird photos are terrific. Well done. And Boomer is adorable. Thanks for stopping by Joyful Altitude today and taking the time to comment. Very much appreciated. God bless.
ReplyDeleteDelightful collection Gary - I second Carver's comments, and those Chickadees are sweet!
ReplyDeleteWow, I am envious, I would love to see these birds. great photos.
ReplyDeleteYour photos are so good and they make me so happy but at the same time a bit homesick, because some of those birds (the grosbeaks) were birds we saw pretty often in Oregon (and never do here). The redpolls, hoary or not, would be a gift! I'm not sure I've ever seen them (maybe in Texas that one time we were there in the spring).
ReplyDeleteYou see such an amazing variety of birds!
ReplyDeleteExcellent photos! The Redpolls and Grosbeaks are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteFantastic shots of very colorful birds.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos Gary. Your world looks so black and white except for your magnificent birds and when the sun comes out and paints the sky blue.
ReplyDeleteHow amazing! Great captures!
ReplyDeleteMore wonderful bird shots!

Hi there - I really love these finches - they must be a real challenge to ID when you are first starting.
ReplyDeleteThe fires at The Prom were started by lightning and the rock slides by really heavy rain - 25% of a year’s rainfall in 24 hours!

Great shots! The Grosbeaks are so colorful.
ReplyDeletethose Grosbeaks are fantastic and I think to myself (....what a wonderful day), yes that too, but how do you 'hide' in the snow? Maybe the birds are glad to see someone; you offer food perhaps? Such beautiful photographs and I'm trying to imagine living in those conditions, and actually stepping outdoors and taking those photographs. How cold would it be??
ReplyDeleteGreat photos of all the birds showing lots of detail for ID. I like the little bit of blue sky!
ReplyDeleteWonderful birds and scenery. Never seen a Hoary Redpoll.
