A Touch of Winter on the Vermilon River. Mourning Doves,Rusty Blackbirds, Grackles , Blue Jays, A Mourning Cloak and Cabbage White Butterfly,Wild Sunflowers and A Leopard Frog.

Vernilon Looking NW.
This post was written on Saturday, a day that the temperature hit an over night low of 2 degrees C, about 28 degrees F. And yes we had snow in the morning from about 5 until 9 when the sun broke through and it began to warm. Of course it didn't stay but it's just a little nudge to the wild ones to consider migration, hibernation, or a colour change, while stocking up on the food that remains. A big nudge to me to get the winter kit out; to Boomer it's pure bliss. Tomorrow is suppose to be warmer. So I'm showing a little fall, a little winter and a little summer just to brighten up the old mentality. In the scenes the skies are cloudy, but you can see the effect on the ridge when the sun breaks through and highlights the golds. Most of the photos are self explanatory, except for the Rusty Blackbird Female non-breeding, which is another first for me, and was hanging around with a flock of Grackles. I read on a site that you should always check out a flock of Blackbirds as the flock contains many types, and it's worked out every time. Initially I had identified it as a Cowbird, but a like posting on NWOBirds and the  Cornell site quickly convinced me otherwise. Another bird disguised in a fall or non-breeding plummage. A Post to MY World Tuesday @ http://ourworldtuesdaymeme.blogspot.com/ and Scenic Sunday @ http://scenicsunday.blogspot.com/

  1. Beautiful images Gary I love the Mourning Cloak a newbie for me.

The weather has been crazy in the UK for the last week. Friday was the warmest September day for over a hundred years and yesterday was the hottest October day ever recorded... 85f +

    Snow has been forecast soon...

  2. You get the best shots, Gary! I don't think I have ever seen a better one of a cowbird than that first one. Winter makes you feel so alive. I can't wait, cold toes or not!

  11. What a great set of photos for today, Gary. The sun on the hilltops is beautiful, and I've also never heard of the Rusty Blackbird. She's cute, especially in the first photo.
Skritch Boom on the head from me! I'm glad he's liking the weather.

  17. Great selection of wildlife and scenery you show us.

Gary, when I show our glorious spring, the comments I get are "I can't believe you are in spring while we are in fall'. I sort of got sick of them.

Great cowbird and it is fun to think you had butterflies and snow the same day there must be a country song there somewhere.
