Red Foxes of The Vermilon River

We saw this fox and then he bolted into a hidey hole and proceeded to watch us. This is one of my favourite shots taken just after I got the camera. The photos are grainy because the ISO was too high and of course the white balance is difficult because it's bright sunshine and he is in shade. Still I like the shot.

  1. Gary, Great captures! What camera are you using? I love the way the fox's head is framed by the pine branches. How far away where you?

  2. The whole photo is an accident. We had been out hiking on a Friday. Our Friday hike always ends in lunch at one of the pubs close to trail end. There are several choices. On the way back we took a private road which is quite rough and we had put away our equipment. We were really looking for bears. He bolted into the hole; I pulled the camera with its 70-300mm lens which was not fully extended and shot away. Its too grainy, its dark, and I was using PSE 4 at the time. And I didn't know what I was doing. But I like the shot. For my equipment list, see archives. What a story of luck!!!

  3. I forgot to say: I had to roll down the window on the opposite side, and lean through. Maybe he was 15 feet away.I think he felt sorry for me.

  4. Great story Gary! Taking nature photos is a lot like being a quick draw artist and you can never be fast enough. I have hundreds of great empty branch pictures in my recycle bin.
I am fascinated on your take of Northern Ontario. I checked out some of your earlier posts last night so I am a little better up to speed. You have a prodigious output i.e. 46 entries in October alone! Your growing following is well deserved.

  7. Thanks Julian. I still say it was a complete accident, and he posed for me.
