I wasn't going to post this week except I got some great shots of this fellow, who virtually landed in front of me. He was so close that I got no full body shots. I didn't dare reset the lens because photos of these pileateds are hard to come by. You can check out Cornell for more facts, but these fellows are about the size of a crow so you can realize how striking they are. This is a male as evident from his mustache. I'll leave you to watch the slide show by clicking on the photos.
A post to: I'd Rather be Birding; Our World Tuesday, and WBW.
I realized that I didn't mention, and needed to incorporate Bobbi into my post. He is fast becoming a character in his own right. If I didn't get to visit your blog its because of time constraints.
congratulations on the pileated! beautiful, close-in shots!
ReplyDeletesecondly, congratulations on bobbi!!! so glad you have a new dog!
Once again, color me green. I so want to see and photograph just that. What a wonderful series of photos of the woodpecker! You may find me on your doorstep [kidding] so you can show me where you spotted it.

ReplyDeleteI'm lucky to have a pair living nearby. I hear them daily but don't always see them. I only average about one photo a year.
Do keep us up to date on Bobbi.
So good to see you blogging again Gary and your new companion growing up nicely. I did not know you lived in seniors' facility. Nice to have other people around who look out for you a bit. Glad you can get out for your long walks again. You have been sorely missed,by me at any rate. I love to see what is going on in your woods. How are your videos coming on?
ReplyDeleteSuper series, and if you click very fast, almost like a Charlie Chaplin movie. love the colours, he must be quite large, and Bobbi, is that a neck warmer, or part of his winter coat/jacket? He is a super boy. So glad to have you back again. Cheers, Jean.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots of the woodpecker.
ReplyDeletenice to see Bobbi in his turtle-neck sweater looking very handsome! Do you take him out birding with you dressed in red? I'd have thought you might've had him in army-camouflage Gary :) Maybe he bought in the beautiful pileated woodpecker for you - equally as handsome! Great photos, you don't like to fiddle with the camera when they land right close by like this

Great photos! Wow, what a lucky sighting. Thanks for the blog visit.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots of that woodpecker!
ReplyDeleteA question from me here...Why must this sweet dog have these "things" "belt" around his mouth/nose...
I've been out of touch and hadn't realized Boomer is no longer with you. So very sorry, because I know you were wonderful buddies. Very happy to meet Bobby. He's a lucky dog for sure. As for the Pileated, my heart about doubles its pace whenever I see one. Great photos!
ReplyDelete...thanks for visiting today Gary.
ReplyDeleteAs I stated before, I was green with envy...still am!!
Gary, excellent shots of the Pileated! They can be so tricky to snap photos of! Hope you are well. The pooch looks very smart:)

What amazing shots. I've never seen a bird like that before. Your patience was amply rewarded. All the best, Bonny
ReplyDeleteSuch wonderful photographs of the beautiful bird..thanks for sharing..
ReplyDeleteNice photos. I agree the Pileated is hard to catch. They just keep moving. I hear when I go hiking around FLA but once I find it - it flies away.
ReplyDeleteNice to get better acquainted with Bobbi. You were lucky (well, that and extremely talented) to get those lovely portraits of the pileated. I have just recently thrown away half a dozen pictures of flashes of red blobs -- basically all I ever have gotten of this guy through the limbs.
ReplyDeleteWow; Fantastic pictures of the pileated woodpecker♡♡♡
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for my absence, I was a bit under the weather since Monday. But slowly getting better♪
Sending you Lots of Love and Hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*
Welcome back Gary (and now Bobby). Lovely shots in this post, sometimes the unexpected is far better than a planned effort that doesn't materialise as expected.
