A Pileated Woodpecker of The Vermilon River.

I wasn't going to post this week except I got some great shots of this fellow, who virtually landed in front of me. He was so close that I got no full body shots. I didn't dare reset the lens because photos of these pileateds are hard to come by. You can check out Cornell for more facts, but these fellows are about the size of a crow so you can realize how striking they are. This is a male as evident from his mustache. I'll leave you to watch the slide show by clicking on the photos.

A post to: I'd Rather be BirdingOur World Tuesday, and WBW.

I realized that I didn't mention, and needed to incorporate Bobbi into my post. He is fast becoming a character in his own right. If I didn't get to visit your blog its because of time constraints.

  9. Excellent shots! Great getting the eye so defined.
I'm lucky to have a pair living nearby. I hear them daily but don't always see them. I only average about one photo a year.

Glad you can get out for your long walks again. You have been sorely missed,by me at any rate. I love to see what is going on in your woods. How are your videos coming on?

  11. Super series, and if you click very fast, almost like a Charlie Chaplin movie. love the colours, he must be quite large, and Bobbi, is that a neck warmer, or part of his winter coat/jacket? He is a super boy. So glad to have you back again. Cheers, Jean.

  13. nice to see Bobbi in his turtle-neck sweater looking very handsome! Do you take him out birding with you dressed in red? I'd have thought you might've had him in army-camouflage Gary :) Maybe he bought in the beautiful pileated woodpecker for you - equally as handsome! Great photos, you don't like to fiddle with the camera when they land right close by like this

  40. Nice photos. I agree the Pileated is hard to catch. They just keep moving. I hear when I go hiking around FLA but once I find it - it flies away.

  41. Nice to get better acquainted with Bobbi. You were lucky (well, that and extremely talented) to get those lovely portraits of the pileated. I have just recently thrown away half a dozen pictures of flashes of red blobs -- basically all I ever have gotten of this guy through the limbs.
