Some Birds of the Vermilon River. A Post to WBW.

Tree Sparrow
I was initially going to call this post "favourites of mine", but I soon realized that all the animals or birds that I see become favourites of mine. I suppose I glory in nature. I was also going to call it " Sparrows of the Vermilon", but I hold that one until the wild sunflowers, smaller than the domestic variety, in my garden go to seed. They're growing now and will soon be ready. When they're ready, I bait the whole area with seeds and see what shows up. Last year I got a great collection of sparrows, and I hope it works again this year. So that explains my current title.

Having said that here is a selection of sparrows.

Song Sparrow Signing his Heart Out.

Male Goldfinch.
The Dark-eyed Junco should be with the sparrows as he is actually a sparrow. They've left me now and moved further north to the boreal forest.

As I said earlier I have seen more Yellow-rumped Warblers this year, and this fellow is perservering in a wind storm, singing nevertheless.

Male Purple Finch.

Robin
I never tire of the Robin who wakes Boom & I in the morning. I think this fellow looks especially majestic.

Certainly this Grackle looks slightly mad.

The Buffleheads below are new to me. They're named "Bufflehead" Because the male's head is reminiscent of a buffalo head.

I put this post together in the new dashboard format that Blogger/Google is so proud of. It then disappears and I have to go to the old format, post a blank, and call up this post and delete the blank. Isn't Google a marvel??

  3. The grackle cracks me up. They always look like they carry a grudge against the world.

  4. All great shots. My sparrows are STILL feeding their grown young. Fun to watch since the young make such a racket to be fed even though they are flying to my feeders. Will they ever leave the parents think! LOL

  16. Hi there - great set of shots. I like the dark eyed junco - I remember see one in a car park once - I'd have to look up where it was. I had no idea at all what it was. The local birders were helpful - but only after they had stopped laughing!

  22. All your bird photos are great, but I have to say the tree sparrows are exceptional in their clarity...only if that damn branch wasn't in the way. Oh I know all to well about in-the-way branches and leaves. Well done.

  27. A real treat to see such a variety of "Canadian" birds up close and personal here! Sparrows are such little sweeties, I find, and robins irrepresibly cheerful with their chirping song. I find it a treat to catch sight of golden finches at a certain time of the year here in New Brunswick, flying in to feed and move on elsewhere, I guess. Gackles are seriously under-rated--they are really quite beautiful.

  28. You have such a beautiful variety there!
    Lovely photos!

  29. Wonderful images... I've not seen some of these birds myself but maybe they don't live around here. I'm especially fond of the Tree Sparrow and Yellow-rumped Warbler images... and the Dark-eyed Junco! The last is a bird that visits my garden in winter and I have tried, tried and tried again to get a decent image... VERY hard to capture in my garden! (thanks for dropping by to view my Mallard images, taken while traveling in Sweden)

  30. It's interesting that birds by the same name here in the NE are often shaded just a wee bit differently. I noticed you didn't post any shots of my least favorite noise-maker, the English House Sparrow. Pretty but annoyingly chatty.
