Identifiable by the long black beak and the lack of a red head patch as a female Hairy Woodpecker, I found her just north of the east track land trail. Up to now, I had no photos of a female. Beautiful plumage colours against the white birch I think.
I love the hairy woodpeckers and I have been pleasantly surprised to see more of them coming to the feeders even as our area becomes more developed. It is hard to get a shot of them as they are so shy...You have a wonderful blog... Michelle...WNY
ReplyDeleteGreat capture Gary! Our woodpeckers keep us company all winter in the North no matter how cold it gets. Boy you had some nice sunlight to get these beautiful photographs!
ReplyDeleteTo Springman:It sure was a beutiful day When I took those photos.
ReplyDeleteTo Michelle: Thanks for the visit. Hairy Woodpeckers are common here as are Northern Flickers, and less common the pilated woodpecker which I have 1 photo of. Visit us again. Boom and Gary.
