Female Red-Winged Blackbird and Veery's Of The Vermilon River

Perhaps somewhat drab in comparison to the male, the female Red-Winged Blackbird is still a good looking bird on her own merit. The two Verry's can be questioned because of their similarity to Hermit Thrushes and Wood Thrushes. But I think I'm right here and then again maybe I'm not.

  1. Nice pics,Gary. I believe it's a Hermit Thrush though. Note the reddish tail in sharp contrast to the back. Also the reddish wash on the flight feathers point to a Hermit Thrush. A Veery is pretty uniformly reddish all over.

  2. Hi Hilke: Good to see you back again. I find these guys hard to tell apart. Thanks for the lesson.
