Full Moon of the Vermilon River. A Post to Skywatch.

1 Full Moon

2 Full Moon
Still interested in moon photos, Boom and I took these photos in the dead of night on the forest rim. Remember the earlier photos I took were taken in late day. The photos are hand held, it's too cold to use a tripod or to use it as a monopod. And no Boom and I did not do any howling. I also used the 150-500mm lens as opposed to the 70-300mm. The Exif's are as follows:
1) Photo 1. 1/200sec,F8, and EC-1 step.
2) Photo 2. 1/60 sec F8 350mm EC-1 step.
The photos were brightened and enlarged in PS8. To people who said they didn't understand the Exif's,they will only mean something if you have a digital SLR.

Here are some moon folklore items. This lunar phase involves a lot of math so I'm sticking to folklore stuff.
1) Full moons are associated with insomnia and insanity. Sort of fits doesn't it. After all Boom and I are taking photos in the middle of the night at -41 C (no conversion necessary).
2) The full moon has many names, some of which are:
a) blue moon-when there is an extra full moon.
b) The January full moon is referred to in English as an Old Moon; in Algonquian as a wolf moon and sometimes in English as an ice moon. Boom and I like "Wolf Moon"as we saw one a few nights later; no camera of course.

  4. Hi Randi. It was that amazing dry cold that along with the wind just sucks the moisture out of your face.

  6. Hi Sylvia. I think I'm finished with the moon for a while, unless a good quater comes along. I'd like to capture some good star shots.

  7. That's really nice, and, thanks for signing our petition, it makes everything.

  8. Ah, yes, lunar = the origin of the name "looney-tunes"! LOL
Beautiful shots of the moon, Gary. It takes real dedication to drag yourself and your dog out in the dead of night to take photos. Good work.

  9. Hi Bob. What Bob is talking about is the Government threat to the forests of the UK. Those forests that are so famous like the Forest of Dean, Sherwood forest, the New Forest etc. It's just not a UK threat but in a sense to the forests of the world because of their ability to trap carbon. This means "Nation Forests" are a world asset. To support Bob and his fellows go to http://woodlandtrust.org.uk/protect and at least read it and sign the petition if you agree.

  18. Well done Gary & Boomer! I also like taking moon pics and was lucky enough to get some decent shots of the winter solstice eclipse last year. Feel free to take a peek HERE

  23. Well, I did the howling for both of you . . . at -41C, isn't that a bit cool?
I hope you did not take your gloves off to click.

  24. I think Boom wanted to give a little howl, Sally.

  28. Hi Arija. I wear two pairs of gloves, I take the miitts off but the gloves are thin enough to work the shutter, and the settings.

  29. -41C!!! That's beyond my imagination. I guess that your battery died so quickly. Is your 150-500mm lens Sigma? I want Sigma APO 50-500mm F4.5-6.3, BTW.
    Have a wonderful weekend.

  30. Hi Yoshi. No the battery seemed alright. Yes my lens is a Sigma 150-500mm, and I'm really happy with it.The 50-500mm would be more useful as I could get rid of my Nikon 70-300mm.

  31. Beautiful moonshots, I particularly like the detail and clarity of the first.

    A 50-500 must be a bruiser of a lens, weight-wise.

And did you say -41C? *faints dead away*

  32. I've never tried a moon photo, but you're inspiring me to get out there. Of course, our skies have to clear of the thick cloud layer that has been plaguing us!

p.s. My son loves huskies and malamutes and fell in love with Boom just now when he saw your banner!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Thanks Robin. The 50-500mm would get rid of the additional weight of the 70-300mm. The reach of a 500mm is a minimium necessity for wild life.

  34. Boom appreciates all the compliments he can get, Kelly. I left the code for Boomer's story on your site if your son wants to read it.

  35. Very good full moon shots! It is always amazing to me how much detail we can capture with a camera these days of something so far away.

  36. With the right lens and an SLR camera, you can do a lot Mary.

  37. When my mother took me back to Hong Kong in 1956, yes I really am that old, she showed me the Rabbit in the Moon, not the man. You caught the rabbit with your lens.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I had to go back and look for the rabbit, Alison.

  39. Nice shots of the moon, Gary. Would you believe I passed on some clear sky opportunities to photograph the moon because our temp was around 18°F/-8°C? What a wimp I am!

  40. I'm out with Boom anyway, and so bundled up I look like the Michelin man,so don't feel bad.
